Venezuela an oil-rich country drudges along in its seventh year of severe instability. The sinking terrain is in dire need of humanitarian aid given growing unemployment, broken hospitals and food shortage.
Amidst this gruesome period, Venezuela's president Nicolás Maduro has decided to expel the EU ambassador giving her 72 hours to return to the EU.
This sudden move comes after the imposition of a stiff measure introduced by the 27-nation bloc against 11 Venezuelans who are in the president's inner circle and head a National Assembly in opposition to Juan Guaidó, a figure backed by both the US and the EU.
The actions taken include a travel ban and the freezing of their assets, the EU mentioned that these were directed at the specified individual and not the population at large.
Although Juan Guaidó has largely been supported by leaders in the EU, Canada and the US, it is Maduro who still holds the reigns of the military and is backed by international support from allies like China, Cuba, Russia and Iran.
The expelled ambassador has been summoned by the bloc on Tuesday. She has also been thanked by the opposition led by Juan Guaidó for her humanitarian work and endless efforts.
The decision of expulsion has also been deeply criticized by the EU, they claim that the crisis "can only be addressed through a peaceful and negotiated solution among Venezuelans."
