Five Feet Apart

Updated: Apr 16, 2021

Five Feet Apart is a young adult romantic fiction by Rachael Lippincott, New York Times bestseller and the good read choice winner for the best young adult fiction of 2019. It has also been adapted into a movie starring Haley Lu Richardson and Cole Sprouse, directed by Justin Baldoni.

The book, aptly titled, Five Feet Apart, takes the readers into the world of two young lovers, who could never touch each other. Human tactility- we do not understand its value and importance in our lives until and unless we ourselves do not get to touch the person we love, give them a warm, comforting hug when they need us or feel the warmth of their touch when we are experiencing turbulence in our lives.

Imagine living in a world where you would not touch your best friend or your first love. It is anything but scary.

Stella Grant did not choose to fall in love with a boy she could never touch, because by doing so she could have killed them both. But, love is never by choice. Will Newman did not choose to fall in love with a girl he could never touch, whom he could kill just by breathing close to her.

Stella likes to be in control, she knows that she has to live, for her parents. She cannot afford to be liberal with her treatment or precautions. Will is just the opposite, he is hopeless, he knows that one day or the other, he has to die. Will is exactly what Stella needs to stay away from.

Both are suffering from a disease each and Will is a patient of B-cepacia, a bacteria which spreads by touching. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly the cry, "Six feet apart at all times", does not feel like safety but more like a punishment.

Five Feet Apart brings out the theme of love perfectly. Love, between two sisters, Stella and Abbey. Love, between best friends, Stella and Poe. Love, between two passionate lovers, Stella and Will. Five Feet Apart is a heart-touching novel, it's emotional and can make you cry every time you read it.

If you are an avid reader who loves to read about young adult romance, then this book is perfect for you. Read Five Feet Apart to know how and why the cry, ‘Six Feet Apart’ changes to the title itself, ‘Five Feet Apart’. Who stole that one foot?
